Letter From Our Board Chair

October 2009

Dear Friends,

Despite a tumultuous past year in the world's financial markets and in our own back yards, the Santa Fe Mountain Center continues to thrive and stand firm in its commitment to outdoor, experiential adventure programs for at-risk youth and other under-served populations in the Santa Fe community and throughout the state of New Mexico. Even in these uncertain times, 2009 was a year of growth and refinement of vision for the Santa Fe Mountain Center.

Programs

Our programs use methods that are an alternative to traditional educational and therapeutic approaches. We create dynamic learning experiences that include elements of adventure, education, and challenge all in an outdoor setting. After participating in programs, we hear our clients say the following:

  • SFMC is a safe place for them to express themselves
  • SFMC teaches respect for others and for the environment
  • SFMC creates trust and teamwork
  • SFMC teaches skills and strategies to deal with difficult situations
  • SFMC instills confidence and fosters leadership
  • SFMC is a caring environment which creates a sense of belonging
  • SFMC makes a difference

Facilities

Located in an old chicken coop and grain tower in Tesuque, New Mexico, our facility is in much need of repairs and renovations.

  • In 2008, we received a generous donation from a local foundation for partial renovations to our headquarters. We have completed the planning phase of the project and hope to begin remodeling by the end of 2009.
  • Over the last 4 years, SFMC has received a total of $675,000.00 in Capital Outlay money from the New Mexico State Legislature and we have been working with Santa Fe County officials to purchase land and develop a site for a wilderness camp facility for our overnight adventure camps. We have recently signed the lease agreement with Santa Fe County and we anticipate that we will have a purchase agreement by the end of November for a beautiful, 22 acre parcel of land in La Cueva (Pecos/Glorietta area), New Mexico.

Our success is the result of hard work, support, and passion from all of our participants, staff, Board of Directors and donors. I hope you all find our achievements as rewarding as we do. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Best Regards,

Jennifer Croy
President of the Board
